Income tax in Nevada

Nevada's freedom from income tax is constitutional rather than merely statutory: Article 10, Section 1 of the Nevada Constitution provides that no income tax shall be levied upon the wages or personal income of natural persons. The revenue comes off the casino floor instead — the Gaming Commission collects a monthly license fee on gross gaming revenue that steps up from 3.5% on the first $50,000 a month, to 4.5% between $50,000 and $134,000, to 6.75% on everything above that (NRS 463.370). A separate 9% Live Entertainment Tax is imposed on the admission charge at any facility with a minimum occupancy of 200. There is one payroll levy in the mix, but it is not withheld from you: the Modified Business Tax is paid by employers, at 1.17% for most general businesses, with the first $50,000 of quarterly wages left non-taxable under NRS 363B.110.

Nevada income tax structure (2026)

Nevada has no state income tax. Wages, salaries, and self-employment income are untaxed at the state level — only federal income tax and FICA come out of your paycheck.

Common questions

Do I file a Nevada income tax return?
Not for wage income. Nevada has no individual income tax for 2026, so your only income tax return is the federal one, and a $80,590 income — Nevada's median — owes the state $0.
How much income tax is due on the median Nevada income?
On Nevada's median household income of $80,590 (2024 Census figure), a single filer owes about $8,900 in federal income tax and $0 to Nevada. Adding $6,165 of Social Security and Medicare leaves roughly $65,525.
What taxes do I still pay in Nevada?
Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%) still apply — together about $15,065 a year at Nevada's $80,590 median income. Nevada raises its own revenue through sales taxes and employer-side business taxes.
Why is take-home pay higher in Nevada?
Only because the state line is zero — federal tax and FICA are identical everywhere. At Nevada's $80,590 median income, the typical income-taxing state would take about $3,189 more per year that Nevada residents keep.

Estimates for general informational purposes only; not tax advice. Nevada figures are simplified (credits, local taxes, and AGI adjustments vary) and should be verified with the state Department of Revenue. Nevada has no state income tax, so there is no state schedule to simplify — this calculator covers what comes out of your pay, not the sales taxes and employer-side business taxes that Nevada relies on instead.
