Based on 2026 Florida rules and 2026 federal rules, with the standard deduction and no other adjustments. Median income is the 2024 Census figure.

Income tax in Florida

Florida's lack of an income tax is not a policy a future legislature could quietly reverse — it is written into the state constitution. Article VII, Section 5(a) bars any tax on the income of natural persons who are residents or citizens of the state, beyond amounts creditable against a similar federal or state tax. That protection pointedly stops at people: subsection (b) contemplates taxing the income of residents other than natural persons, which is why Florida businesses still face a corporate income tax while individuals face none. Day to day the state runs on a 6% general sales tax with oddly specific carve-outs — new mobile homes at 3%, amusement machine receipts at 4%, and electricity at 6.95% — plus the discretionary county surtax that many Florida counties add on top.

Florida income tax structure (2026)

Florida has no state income tax. Wages, salaries, and self-employment income are untaxed at the state level — only federal income tax and FICA come out of your paycheck.

Common questions

Do I file a Florida income tax return?
Not for wage income. Florida has no individual income tax for 2026, so your only income tax return is the federal one, and a $75,630 income — Florida's median — owes the state $0.
How much income tax is due on the median Florida income?
On Florida's median household income of $75,630 (2024 Census figure), a single filer owes about $7,809 in federal income tax and $0 to Florida. Adding $5,786 of Social Security and Medicare leaves roughly $62,036.
What taxes do I still pay in Florida?
Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%) still apply — together about $13,594 a year at Florida's $75,630 median income. Florida raises its own revenue through sales and tourism taxes.
Why is take-home pay higher in Florida?
Only because the state line is zero — federal tax and FICA are identical everywhere. At Florida's $75,630 median income, the typical income-taxing state would take about $2,951 more per year that Florida residents keep.

Estimates for general informational purposes only; not tax advice. Florida figures are simplified (credits, local taxes, and AGI adjustments vary) and should be verified with the state Department of Revenue. Florida has no state income tax, so there is no state schedule to simplify — this calculator covers what comes out of your pay, not the sales and tourism taxes that Florida relies on instead.
