Calculator Methodology
What each calculator computes, the formula behind it, the assumptions baked into it, and the primary sources every rate and threshold came from — 27 documents, one per tool.
What these pages contain
Most calculators online are a black box: numbers go in, a number comes out, and there is no way to tell whether it used this year's tax brackets or a figure someone typed in three years ago. Every calculator here has a page that opens the box.
Each one carries the same four things:
- The formula, written out — the actual arithmetic, not a description of it.
- The steps, in the order the engine performs them, including the edge cases that change the answer.
- The assumptions, stated plainly. What the tool holds constant, what it simplifies, and what it does not model at all — because a calculator that hides its limits is worse than one that admits them.
- The sources, linked to the primary authority: the IRS, the Census Bureau, the CFPB, a state Department of Revenue. Not a summary of a summary.
These are the same documents linked from the “Full methodology & sources” line at the bottom of each calculator. They exist so you can check the work rather than trust it, and so that when a number here disagrees with a number somewhere else, you can find out which one is wrong.

When these change
Each methodology page carries its own last-updated date. Tax brackets, contribution limits, and state rates are revised as the underlying authority publishes them, and the data update log records every change with its source. If you find something wrong, the corrections policy explains how it gets fixed.
Methodology pages describe how each tool computes its result; they are documentation, not advice. Estimates for general informational purposes only — not financial, tax, or investment advice.
