Income tax in South Dakota
South Dakota funds itself through consumption taxes with a distinctly seasonal shape. The state sales and use tax rate is 4.2%, applied to the gross receipts of retail sales, leases and rentals of tangible personal property, products transferred electronically, and services. Layered on top is a 1.5% tourism tax covering hotels and lodging, campgrounds, motor vehicle and recreational equipment rentals, recreational services, spectator events, and visitor attractions — and for so-called visitor-intensive businesses it applies only during June, July, August, and September. The Department of Revenue even publishes dedicated tax applications, licensing instructions, and municipal tax rates just for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which is a fair indication of how much of the state's revenue arrives with out-of-state visitors rather than resident paychecks.
South Dakota income tax structure (2026)
South Dakota has no state income tax. Wages, salaries, and self-employment income are untaxed at the state level — only federal income tax and FICA come out of your paycheck.

How we calculate this
Federal brackets per our income-tax methodology, plus South Dakota's 2026 state tax. Estimates only — not tax advice.
Estimates for general informational purposes only; not tax advice. South Dakota figures are simplified (credits, local taxes, and AGI adjustments vary) and should be verified with the state Department of Revenue. South Dakota has no state income tax, so there is no state schedule to simplify — this calculator covers what comes out of your pay, not the sales and use taxes that South Dakota relies on instead.
